My name is Jordan Thompson. I’m 18 years old and when I found out I was pregnant, I was a senior in high school. I took 4 home pregnancy tests before finally accepting that the little pink plus sign wasn’t going away.
I was lost, confused and at a loss for words. I was so scared of being stereotyped as “another pregnant teenager.”
I talked to my fiancé, who was my boyfriend of 4 and a half years at the time, and we discussed every option but parenting because we had no faith of being able to raise this innocent baby while we were so young. I made $50 a week by babysitting and he didn’t have a job at all.
After worrying about what my mom would say, I finally got the courage to tell her 2 weeks later. After talking to her and sharing what I considered bad news and telling her we were not going to choose parenthood, she told me to go by the Pregnancy Resource Center after school the next day. She told me that it was a non-profit organization that would help me with my decision. My fiancé and I both went.
After sitting in the car for almost 15 minutes, we finally walked in the door. I saw a lady sitting at the desk who immediately jumped up, greeted me and introduced herself as “Laurie.”
I felt welcome and I instantly had the feeling that the Pregnancy Resource Center was a gift to me.
I filled out 2 sheets of paperwork and then she took me back first to talk with me one-on-one before bringing back my fiancé. After talking with her for 25 minutes, I went in the bathroom and took another pregnancy test. In 45 seconds, she told me it was positive. We then brought my fiancé back and I looked at him and I almost broke into tears when I told him the result.
Mrs. Laurie comforted me and reassured me everything would be OK. I didn’t believe her at first, but she opened her heart up to me and talked to me. That’s all I needed someone to do. She talked with me about every option and helped me and my fiancé make the decision to parent our baby together.
She told me about the many things that the center could do to help me out. I was able to get diapers, wipes, clothes and more all for attending a milestone class. I gave birth to my beautiful and healthy little girl on September 7. She was 6 lbs and 9 oz.
I couldn’t be more thankful for all that the ladies did for me and my family. I had never felt more welcomed by a complete stranger.
Without the love and support I received from all of the ladies at the PRC, I would not have known what to do. I probably would have made a decision that I would have later regretted. The Pregnancy Resource Center of Lee County was truly a gift sent from God.
Making the decision to go and get help from them was the best decision I have made.
